36 Hours in Carmel Valley Ranch — Hiking, Hot Tubs & Historic Charm

Carmel Valley, CA

We just got back from an awesome overnight staycation at Carmel Valley Ranch, and this place is like a choose-your-own-adventure story on a ranch. From hiking with goats to enjoying a hot tub with a view, every moment was packed with something new (and relaxing). Here’s how we spent our 36 hours at this great spot near the coast:

🐐 Hiking Up to the Corral

Our adventure started with a hike up to the Corral, where we met friendly goats and sheep! It was a climb but the nature was fun to explore. In the summer it has a whole lot of gnats, but it’s manageable!

They even had lasso roping classes going on nearby for kids! I didn’t try it this time, but it looked super fun. 🐴

🥾 Hiking Tip:

We tried the Huff ‘n’ Puff Trail — and spoiler: you will huff and puff. 😅 But it was worth it! If you’re looking for a more gentle option, there’s a longer version with an easier incline, and it was even more scenic.

∞ Sensory Note: Bring water and layers — some areas are shaded and cool, others sunny and warm. Also: the goats were friendly but loud when they got excited!

🧖‍♀️ Relaxing at the Spa & Adult Pool

After our hike, we chilled out in the adult-only pool — which I get to go to now! It was quiet, clean, and the hot tub overlooks the hills and trees. I could’ve stayed there for hours. (Actually, we did.)

Then we visited the spa, which of course became one of my favorite parts of the trip. I tried a steam room for the first time — I did not like it at all, I felt like I couldn’t breathe, I’ll stick to the facial.

∞ Sensory Note: The spa is very quiet, dimly lit, and smells like eucalyptus and lavender. Totally calming!

🛏️ Big Resort, Lots of Space to Explore

Carmel Valley Ranch is huge — it feels like its own little village tucked into the hills. It’s perfect for families with teens (like me!) who want to do different things but still meet up for snacks and laughs.

Here’s a look at all the cool stuff families can enjoy:

🏊‍♀️ River Ranch Activity Hub

This is the heart of the action and great for all ages. It includes:

  • Family pool, wading pool, and splash pad

  • Adult pool with hot tub and views

  • Tennis + pickleball courts

  • The River Ranch Café for easy bites (mac n cheese is awesome)

  • Expanded pool deck with fire pits and lounge chairs

🎨 Adventure Den + Game Lawn

These spaces are especially for kids and tweens with themed activities:

  • Adventure Tots (ages 2–5) and Adventure Kids (ages 5–12)

  • Lawn games, treats, and space to roam

  • Glow-in-the-dark hiking and scavenger hunts

  • Bee-keeping classes and rancher lessons!

🐐 Animal Encounters

Throughout the property, you’ll find friendly goats, alpacas, and other farm animals to meet and feed. Great for sensory-seeking animal lovers!

🎮 Blu-ray + Board Game Library

Every suite has a Blu-ray player, and you can borrow movies and games from the concierge. We had a movie night in our room — total cozy vibes!

🛏️ Room Features for Families

The suites have smart touches like:

  • Doors between the bedroom and living room for privacy

  • Nightlights in the bathrooms

  • Extensive kids’ menu (even homemade baby purees!)

🚐 Shuttle Service

The resort is so big that they offer a free shuttle to take you around. No need to stress about long walks after a long day.

🍽️ Food at the Ranch vs. Downtown Carmel

The food at the Ranch was good — fresh and yummy, but the options downtown are worth the drive! We drove about 15 minutes to Carmel-by-the-Sea for dinner, and that’s where the magic happened.

We went to Casanova’s, a cozy and beautiful Italian restaurant that’s one of our all-time favorites. I had pasta that tasted like a warm hug and homemade bread that melted in my mouth. 10/10!

After dinner, we walked around the town and found:

🧀 The Cheese Shop of Carmel – a must-stop for cheese fans, like my mom. You can sample everything and the staff is super friendly.
🍫 A local chocolate shop where I picked out a few truffles and fancy bars. (Yes, I ate them all.)

🏰 A Little History on Carmel-by-the-Sea

Carmel isn’t just cute — it has history too. The town was founded in 1902 and quickly became a haven for artists, writers, and free spirits. People like Jack London and Ansel Adams used to hang out here. There are no street numbers on houses, and you’ll spot cottages that look like they belong in a fairy tale.

Fun Fact: Actor Clint Eastwood was even the mayor once. I don’t know a lot about him except Star Wars, but my mom does.

∞ Sensory Note: The town is walkable, quiet (no loud traffic), and has lots of hidden courtyards and small shops. It’s a great place to reset and explore without overwhelming crowds.

Final Thoughts

Carmel Valley Ranch is more than just a resort — it’s a whole experience. From hiking and spa time to splash zones and goats, it has something for every family member. And just a short drive away, Carmel-by-the-Sea offers delicious food, small-town charm, and lots of places to explore.

Goat Hikes, Game Nights & Good Pasta = Perfect Weekend!

Until the next adventure!
