Some students want a traditional college experience but need more academic and executive functioning support than most colleges provide. Adaptive colleges are designed specifically for students with learning differences such as autism, ADHD, dyslexia, and executive functioning challenges.

These schools offer smaller class sizes, structured academic support, coaching, and disability services built into the program. Students live on campus, take college classes, and work toward a degree, but with more support than a traditional university. Examples include programs like Landmark College and Beacon College.

Vocational and career transition programs focus on employment, job training, and independent living skills rather than traditional academic degrees. These programs are often connected to community colleges and include career exploration, internships, job coaching, work experience, and life skills like transportation, budgeting, and workplace communication.

The goal is for students to finish the program with real job experience and employment opportunities. These programs are a great fit for students who want to work, gain independence, and build career skills in a structured and supportive environment.

Programs like College Living Experience (CLE) focus on helping young adults build independence, life skills, social skills, and confidence while living in supported apartments. Students may attend college, work part-time, volunteer, or explore career options while receiving coaching in areas like cooking, budgeting, time management, transportation, organization, and social skills.

These programs are often residential and are designed to help students transition from living at home to living independently with support and structure.

Adult day programs are designed for adults with developmental disabilities who may not be attending college or working full-time but still want structured days, social opportunities, and skill-building activities.

These programs often include life skills training, community outings, volunteer work, recreation, social groups, and sometimes supported employment. Adult day programs can be a good option for individuals who benefit from routine, supervision, and community engagement and may be funded through regional centers or disability services.
