🦀 Making Food Fun: Our Crab-Tasting Adventures!
One of the biggest lessons we’ve learned on our autism journey is this: the more fun you make trying new things, the more likely kids are to give it a shot.
Trying new foods can feel overwhelming — but it doesn’t have to be stressful. Sometimes, it can actually be a blast!
During our road trip back East, we had the chance to try Maryland Blue Crabs, and it became one of our favorite food experiences yet! It wasn’t just about eating crab — it was about creating an experience that was messy, silly, and exciting.
Here are 3️⃣ reasons why trying crab can be a super fun experience for kids (and adults too):
1️⃣ It’s Totally Acceptable to Eat with Your Hands!
At crab restaurants, you’re supposed to get messy.
No worrying about fancy manners — you can dig in, get your hands dirty, and even play with your food a little.
For sensory seekers, this is a dream — and for kids who normally feel pressure around eating, it’s a chance to relax and just have fun.
2️⃣ Small Bites Make It Less Intimidating
The amount of crab meat you get from each shell is tiny — just a little taste at a time.
This makes it perfect for cautious eaters. No big, overwhelming bites. Just tiny bits to try, explore, and get comfortable with a new flavor.
3️⃣ You Get to Use a Hammer!
Where else do you get handed a mini hammer at a restaurant and told to smash away?
Using a crab mallet to crack open the shells is ridiculously fun — and turns the whole meal into an adventure.
It’s hands-on, it’s noisy, and it’s on purpose — which makes it a great sensory activity in a safe, structured way.
Since starting our crab adventure, we’ve tried Alaskan King Crab, Maryland Blue Crab, and San Francisco Dungeness Crab — each place offering a different experience and memory. Every new taste, every new setting, every silly moment has helped build confidence around trying new foods (and created some awesome memories too).
So if you’re up for a new adventure — and don’t have shellfish allergies — give it a try! 🦀 You might just discover a new favorite experience.
