Starfish Cove & Mangrove Adventure in Grand Cayman

Port days can be a lot for anyone. The tendering process (waiting in line for that small boat to shore), the heat and humidity with limited shade, and navigating the crowds while finding your group can all feel overwhelming, especially for families with sensory considerations.

But here’s what we’ve learned. The hardest part of a port adventure is usually in the first 30 minutes. Once you are past that and on your way, the calm, beauty, and fun start to unfold.

Our Starfish Cove Experience

We booked the Disney Cruise Port Adventure that took us to Starfish Cove in Grand Cayman. The journey began by gliding through the island’s ancient mangrove forests, a place where twisted roots create natural tunnels and sheltered habitats for marine life. The guides explained how these mangroves have protected Cayman’s coastline for centuries and serve as nurseries for fish. It was both beautiful and educational.

When we reached Starfish Cove, the scene was pure magic. The shallow, crystal-clear waters made it easy to spot starfish resting on the sandy bottom. Avery loved being able to float, splash, and point out the starfish. It felt peaceful, safe, and full of sensory joy.

And then, the crew surprised us with something extra special. On the boat, they cooked up homemade Jamaican beef patties that were absolutely delicious. Warm, flaky, and packed with flavor, they turned a simple snack into one of the highlights of the day.

Port Adventure Pricing

Disney Cruise Line offers this adventure as a packaged excursion. Pricing typically runs around $169 for guests ages 10 and up and $139 for children. The experience includes transportation, time at Starfish Cove, the mangrove ride, and often a picnic or snack.

Independent operators on Grand Cayman offer similar trips, usually priced between $60 and $100 per person depending on whether you combine Starfish Cove with Stingray City or snorkeling stops. Private charters can be arranged for families who want a more tailored experience.

Autism & Sensory-Friendly Notes

  • Tendering: Waiting in line for the small boat to shore can be stressful. We recommend noise-reducing headphones, a comfort item, or distraction like a favorite snack to make it easier.

  • Heat and Humidity: Stay hydrated, bring cooling towels, and wear light clothing and hats. Shade is limited once you are out on the water.

  • Crowds: The beginning of the day can feel chaotic with groups gathering. Once you are on your way, the environment becomes calm and much more manageable.

Final Thoughts

This outing created memories that will last forever. Between the quiet of the mangroves, the beauty of Starfish Cove, Avery’s joy at spotting starfish, and the unexpected treat of Jamaican beef patties fresh from the boat’s kitchen, it was the perfect mix of adventure and comfort.

Port adventures can take extra planning, and the first part of the day can be tough. But the payoff is worth it. For us, Starfish Cove was not only beautiful but also Avery Approved.
